Interoperability with Symplectic Elements - Group privacy level filtering
We are working in partnership with Symplectic to ensure that our Explorer for Institutions (EFI) connector to Elements is robust, and has all the functionality customers need to properly mirror the structures and visibility of their data.
In Elements v6.13, Symplectic introduced new privacy settings for Groups, in order to be able to clearly differentiate between Groups which are suitable to be shared publicly and groups which should remain internal to Elements.
The Altmetric EFI integration with Elements now includes new configuration settings to import Groups based on their privacy level.
1. What’s new?
Customers can now filter the groups they import from Symplectic Elements based on their level of privacy within Elements
This enables them to exclude groups that are visible to other users of Symplectic Elements, but are not relevant for the purposes of tracking research in Altmetric (e.g. administrative groups such as "Funding Reviewers" or "System Admin")
We expect customers will be able to achieve:
More control on how their Elements data is shared with Altmetric
Better filtering of the data they import into the EFI, narrowing it down to the groups they most want to track, and helping users find the most relevant data more easily
A more consistent experience across multiple Digital Science products.
Our external documentation about this feature is available on the Altmetric Support portal.
2. Feature details
Elements v6.13 introduced a more extensive privacy framework, allowing groups to be set as:
Public - This indicates that the data can be shared publicly in downstream systems.
Internal - Data marked as 'Internal' should not be shared publicly but can be viewed by other users of the system.
Read more about group privacy for Elements 6.13 and above here.
Customers can configure their Elements integration to apply these same familiar privacy concepts to their EFI instance. They will be able to choose between two options:
Import all groups (public and internal)
Import public groups only
Please note:
This setting only applies to customers on the v6.13 Elements API or above. For earlier API versions, all groups will be imported, regardless of privacy settings.
The Group Privacy setting is independent of user, research output and relationship privacy levels, which are configured separately (see the relevant release note here)
Changes to a customer’s EFI configuration may trigger a reset and full import of their Elements data. Depending on data volume, this may take several days to complete.
For any further questions, or to arrange updating the configuration of an existing integration, please contact the Altmetric Support team - we'll be happy to help.
