Clinical guidelines are a key attention source in Altmetric. They are broadly defined as documents that offer recommendations for clinicians and healthcare practitioners on how to manage and treat specific medical conditions or support decision-making in patient care.

Given the impact clinical guidelines have on real-world medical practice, attention to research as reflected in these documents can be extremely valuable to anyone seeking to create or report on narratives of impact.

We aim to curate a broad scope of clinical guidelines from organisations around the world, across a wide range of therapeutic areas, adding new documents on a quarterly basis.

What's new?

In November 2024, we launched with a database of clinical guidelines including over 16,000 documents with research mentions from 1,852 unique organizations. In 2025, we grew our coverage from both new and existing sources by 39%, and between March and July 2026, we released a further 3,200+ new clinical guidelines.

In October 2026, we added 4,137 new clinical guidelines from both new and existing sources. Through this new set of documents, we identified an additional 319,168 mentions of research, and 740 brand new organizations we are now tracking.

This takes our total coverage of clinical guidelines to 2,694,873 mentions from 33,481 individual documents and 3,802 unique organizations across 83 different countries.
