Clinical guidelines are a key attention source in Altmetric. They are broadly defined as documents that offer recommendations for clinicians and healthcare practitioners on how to manage and treat specific medical conditions or support decision-making in patient care.

Given the impact clinical guidelines have on real-world medical practice, attention to research as reflected in these documents can be extremely valuable to anyone seeking to create or report on narratives of impact.

We aim to curate a broad scope of clinical guidelines from organisations around the world, across a wide range of therapeutic areas, adding new documents on a quarterly basis.

What's new?

In November 2024, we launched with a database of clinical guidelines including over 16,000 documents with research mentions from 1,852 unique organizations. In 2025, we grew our coverage from both new and existing sources by 39%, ending the year with 2,100,305 mentions from 25,765 individual documents and 2,544 unique organizations.

In March 2026, we added over 1,300 new clinical guidelines from both new and existing sources. Through this new set of documents, we identified an additional 113,213 mentions of research, and 109 brand new organizations we are now tracking.

This takes our total coverage of clinical guidelines to 2,213,518 mentions from 27,227 individual documents and 2,658 unique organizations across 71 different countries.
