Clinical guidelines are a key attention source in Altmetric. They are broadly defined as documents that offer recommendations for clinicians and healthcare practitioners on how to manage and treat specific medical conditions or support decision-making in patient care.

Given the impact clinical guidelines have on real-world medical practice, attention to research as reflected in these documents can be extremely valuable to anyone seeking to create or report on narratives of impact.

We aim to curate a broad scope of clinical guidelines from organisations around the world, across a wide range of therapeutic areas, adding new documents on a quarterly basis.

What's new?

In November 2024, we launched with a database of clinical guidelines including over 16,000 documents with research mentions from 1,852 unique organizations. In March 2025, we added over 1,300 new clinical guidelines from both new and existing sources, and followed it up with over 1,400 new clinical guidelines added in July.

In October 2025 we added over 1,700 new clinical guidelines from both new and existing sources. Through this new set of documents, we identified an additional 179,911 mentions of research, and 250 brand new organizations we are now tracking.

This takes our total coverage of clinical guidelines to 1,953,144 mentions from 24,286 individual documents, and 2,413 unique organizations across 70 different countries.
