1. What's new?

Social media is changing, and so is the way research is discussed. We’re always working to expand the ways our users can track research conversations and attention, and we’re excited to announce a game-changer: as of 3 December 2024, Altmetric is tracking mentions on Bluesky!

2. Value and user impact

Bluesky is an emerging, decentralized social media platform gaining traction in research discussions—and now it’s fully integrated into the Altmetric experience. As one of the first to integrate Bluesky, Altmetric continues to empower the research community with transparent and resilient data tracking.

Here's what this means to Altmetric users:

A broader view of research influence: Discover where conversations about your work are taking place

Enhanced Altmetric Attention Score: Mentions from Bluesky contribute directly to the Altmetric score, ensuring a comprehensive metric of social engagement. BlueSky posts contribute to the Altmetric score in the same way as posts on X / Twitter.

Stay ahead in a shifting landscape: Tracking Bluesky attention in Altmetric enables users to capture more research conversations on a platform the community continues to demonstrate a strong interest in

3. Where will Bluesky data be available?

We are tracking attention from Bluesky across all areas of our product.

4. Features available at launch

As of launch day (3 December 2024), we are tracking:

  • Original posts and replies collected since 24 October 2024

  • Reposts collected since 5 November 2024

  • Quote posts collected since 13 November 2024

In addition, we are working on improvements that will help us add the features below as post-launch iterations. We will share separate release notes when they are live.

  • Embedded links (i.e. where a user has posted a link, allowed the embed to add itself in the post, then consequently removed the URL to save on characters)

  • Mentions included in the alt text of images

  • Cohort data from user profiles

  • Posts published before the dates detailed above (we are working on an improvement that will allow us to track more historical content after launch)

Due to technical limitations, please note we won’t be able to track:

  • Mentions from links created using link shorteners

  • Likes

  • Follower count updates in real time

  • User profile location data
