Affiliation and Funder search improvements: a clearer way to search by organization

Explorer's Advanced Search enables users to filter research outputs by affiliation, or by funder: a powerful way to track the reach and impact of research across organisations and funding bodies. We've been working on significant improvements to make this search more accurate, more flexible, and easier to use at scale.

Until now, organization names in Altmetric didn't always match what you'd see in Dimensions or elsewhere: the search only returned results when typing an organization's exact full name, and there was no way to capture a parent organization's full output in a single step, meaning users tracking large organizations with dozens of subsidiaries had to find and select each one individually.

Our latest enhancements address all of this.

What's new?

  • Organization data is now sourced directly from Dimensions: We've replaced the legacy GRID classification with the latest version of Dimensions' organization database, bringing Altmetric in line with how organizations are named and structured across the rest of the Digital Science portfolio. Organization names always reflect the latest updates applied in Dimensions.

  • Search by acronym, alias, or multilingual name: The autocomplete now matches against the full range of names an organization is known by. Searching "MIT" returns Massachusetts Institute of Technology and its subsidiaries; searching "WHO" returns the World Health Organization.

  • Parent-child hierarchy in the autocomplete: Organizations are now shown with their subsidiaries nested underneath. Each result displays the number of Altmetric-tracked research outputs associated with that organization, so you can see at a glance how much coverage exists before making a selection.

    • Selecting a parent organization includes all its subsidiaries in your search results automatically. If you need to filter to specific subsidiaries rather than the whole group, you can select them individually, without selecting the parent.

  • Saved searches: Existing Affiliation and Funder filters in saved searches continue to work without any changes needed.

A note on search results

The autocomplete displays organizations that have research outputs tracked in Altmetric. Output counts reflect this: they represent the outputs Altmetric has data for, rather than an organization's total publication volume (which is available in Dimensions).

If an organization doesn't appear in search results, it may mean we don't currently have tracked outputs associated with it, or that the name you've entered doesn't match any of the names, acronyms, or aliases we have on record for it. Try searching by acronym or a shorter version of the name if you're not finding what you expect.
